💗 Standing Strong in Pink: Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness in Our Community

A Month to Remember, a Mission That Continues

Not only is October Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but October

also reminds us of something greater than the color pink—it symbolizes hope, courage, and community. At Waste Not Want Not, we believe caring for our neighbors means supporting every part of their journey—body, mind, and spirit. Breast Cancer Awareness Month allows us to honor survivors, remember loved ones, and educate families about the importance of early detection and regular health screenings.

A Conversation That Could Save a Life

Recently, one of our community members shared her story during a visit to our center. She had gone in for her annual mammogram, just as she did every year. She felt fine—no pain, no lumps, no warning signs.

But a few days later, she received a call asking her to return for a follow-up. The radiologist had seen something that didn’t look quite right.

After additional tests, doctors confirmed that she had early-stage breast cancer. Because it was caught so early, her treatment was simple, and her outlook is excellent.

She told us with tears in her eyes,

“Had I waited or skipped my mammogram this year, I might not have had this chance to beat it. I’m so grateful I went.”

Her story reminds us that screening saves lives—not later, not someday, but now.

The Power of Awareness

Breast cancer affects one in eight women during her lifetime. Yet early detection can—and does—save lives. Scheduling mammograms, doing regular self-checks, and knowing family history are small steps that have a significant impact.

Even if you or someone you love has never faced breast cancer, sharing information and encouraging others to get screened can make a real difference.

Community Compassion in Action

Our mission to clothe and care for our community extends beyond providing affordable clothing and essentials. We see the impact that illness can have on families—the missed workdays, the financial strain, and the emotional toll. That’s why we aim to be a place of dignity and comfort for anyone facing a difficult time. When someone is in need, we want them to feel supported, seen, and loved.
